The House That Remembered
The House That Remembered
No one in the village remembered when the house had first appeared. It simply stood at the end of the forgotten road, wrapped in ivy and silence, as though it had always been waiting.
Every autumn, a single candle glowed behind its highest window.
One evening, a young woman named Eleanor followed the faint light. The front door opened before she could knock. Inside, dust covered the furniture, but fresh roses rested upon a grand piano.
She climbed the staircase, drawn by a melody no one else could hear.
At the top, she found a portrait of herself.
Not as she was.
As she would become.
The woman in the painting wore a black lace dress and smiled with peaceful sorrow. Around her neck hung a silver key.
When Eleanor touched the frame, the music stopped.
The house exhaled.
Outside, dawn arrived.
The candle had gone out.
The villagers found the house abandoned once more, its windows dark, its rooms empty.
Only one thing had changed.
A new portrait hung in the hallway.
It was still warm.
